The 9th ENSP-ECTC introduces Advanced Youth Tobacco Policy & Advocacy School:
Mastering EU-Level Lobbying

The International Youth Health Organization presents an Advanced Youth Tobacco Policy & Advocacy School: Mastering EU-Level Lobbying taking place between 21-22 October 2024 focuses on educating the next generation of tobacco control enthusiasts. The aim of the event is to delve into the practical aspects of tobacco control, EU processes, lobbying, and advocacy. By bringing together young professionals from different fields, the event will ensure a strong network of highly motivated and educated individuals who will navigate the future of tobacco control at the national and EU levels.

Taking place between 22-24 October, the ENSP European Conference on Tobacco Control, a high-level scientific event, will enhance the educational program, providing participants with an excellent opportunity to engage with key stakeholders and experienced professionals in the field of tobacco control.

The participants will have the opportunity to join both the Youth school as well as the ENSP conference.

Youth School: 21–22 October 2024
ENSP Conference: 22–24 October 2024
Travel days: 20 and 25 October 2024
Location: Athens, Greece
What are the goals of the Youth School?

The year 2024 is a pivotal one for tobacco control. In 2023, the WHO Framework Convention on Tobacco Control (FCTC), one of the only legally binding global health instruments, celebrated its 20th anniversary. This milestone marks a crucial time for advancing the next phase of FCTC implementation. The event will offer participants, who already have some experience in public health, hands-on knowledge of tobacco control processes at the EU level. Additionally, it will provide essential soft skills necessary for this type of work. We see this event as an opportunity to join forces and to bring our best knowledge and motivation to the table, with the aim of co-creating a healthier future for the people and the planet.

Key learnings:

  • Understanding the functioning of EU Institutions
  • Mastering lobbying and advocacy strategies
  • Exploring the roles of various professionals in tobacco control
  • Analyzing the division of competencies between the EU and Member States in tobacco control
  • Examining Tobacco Industry lobbying tactics at EU and national levels
  • Engaging with key stakeholders at the ENSP Conference
  • Contributing to the development of a Youth Recommendation Document for new EU Commissioners

World Cancer Congress
"Smoking cessation: a neglected, yet essential part of cancer treatment"
The World Cancer Congress aims to strengthen the participants' actions and impact on national, regional and international scales through a multidisciplinary programme featuring the latest successful cancer prevention, diagnosis, treatment and care interventions.

Within the UICC WCC 2024, on 18 September from 14:00 to 15:00 CETENSP and Cancer Patients Europe will hold the session Smoking cessation: a neglected, yet essential part of cancer treatment.

Join this session and learn about different tools/methods that were used for implementing smoking cessation in cancer care in initiatives such as the Cancer Center Cessation Initiative, Canadian Partnership Against Cancer, and ACOS Commission on Cancer and educational tools available in Europe such as the European Network for Smoking and Tobacco Prevention Guidelines and e-learning platform for healthcare professionals. This may help policymakers, health care professionals, and tobacco control and cancer patient advocates from other countries (particularly low- and middle-income countries) to use similar tools/methods for implementing initiatives that aim to overcome the barriers to implementing smoking cessation in cancer care in their own countries.
