The Annual 2023 Consortium meeting of the Joint Action on Tobacco Control 2 (JATC2)

On the 28th April 2023, the Annual consortium meeting of the JATC-2 project took place, within the exciting atmosphere of the 9th European Conference on Tobacco or Health (ECToH), from the 26th to the 28th April 2023.
ECToHs are organised every three years under the auspices of the Association of European Cancer League (ECL). These Conferences are recognised internationally as a main European forum for tobacco control advocates. Each ECToH is attended by important policy-makers, scientists, researchers, advocacy officers, health professionals as well as all others strongly committed to the fight against tobacco.

The 2023 consortium meeting brought together experts and regulators from 21 countries, each bringing their unique expertise and perspectives to the table. The meeting commenced with an opening address by the Head Coordinator, setting the stage for the discussions ahead. Welcoming remarks were also provided by both HADEA and DG SANTE, setting the stage for the discussions ahead. |

The agenda unfolded, covering a range of topics and initiatives. Each presenter shared their findings, their proposals, and success stories to date while planning the next steps took place. As the discussions progressed into the smaller working groups, the breakout sessions grew increasingly dynamic. Participants engaged in passionate discussions, challenging assumptions, and exploring potential synergies. |

The meeting room buzzed with energy as the attendees engaged in lively conversations, exchanging ideas and insights. Collaboration was not limited to the meeting room alone. During breaks and networking sessions, participants connected with one another, strengthening existing relationships and exploring new opportunities within the JATC-2 project.
The meeting concluded with a renewed sense of commitment and determination. The consortium members left the room with a shared understanding that their collaboration within the JATC2 project had the potential to affect tobacco control in Europe.
With a clear roadmap for the next months and a network of collaborators and partners the JATC-2 consortium is ready to take on the challenge and make a difference to tobacco control collaboration in Europe. |

Symposium on Smoke and Aerosol Free Environments
“Learning from Practices to Improve Smoke- and Aerosol-Free Environments (SAFE) in Europe"

On the 25th of April, the Catalan Institute of Oncology, in their role as coordinators of WP8, held a Symposium on Smoke and Aerosol Free Environments: “Learning from Practices to Improve Smokeand Aerosol-Free Environments (SAFE) in Europe”. The event was conducted as a pre-ECToH activity in Madrid and was attended by 35 people. |

The objective of the symposium was to identify learning key aspects of practices on Smoke and Aerosol Free Environments that were informed by experts on a consultation conducted within the framework of JATC2 in 2022. The event was planned as a collaborating and reflective exercise that allowed to go beyond the information gathered in the consultation and extract lessons learned from shared knowledge with the panelists and the attendees. This WP8 symposium brought together a diverse group of experts from various fields and numerous MS, creating a dynamic environment where ideas flourished. |

The aim of the symposium was to map and assess TAPS loopholes and challenges across MS and to identify best practices for the application and enforcement of TAPS bans, both domestic and cross-border in line with FCTC Article 13 and its implementation guidelines, with the overall goal of providing an evidence base that may support the Tobacco Advertising Directive.

World No Tobacco Day 2023

World No Tobacco Day is an annual global campaign observed on May 31st to raise awareness about the health risks associated with tobacco use and to advocate for effective tobacco control policies. As we look forward to World No Tobacco Day 2023, it presents an opportune moment to reflect on the progress made in tobacco control efforts and to strengthen further action towards a tobacco-free world.
The theme for World No Tobacco Day 2023 is “Grow Food, not tobacco.” Tobacco growing harms our health, the health of farmers and the planet’s health. The tobacco industry interferes with attempts to substitute tobacco growing, contributing to the global food crisis.
This campaign encourages governments to end tobacco growing subsidies and use the savings to support farmers to switch to more sustainable crops that improve food security and nutrition.
World No Tobacco Day 2023 will also serve as a platform to advocate for strong tobacco control policies and regulations. Governments and policymakers will be urged to implement and enforce evidencebased measures, such as higher tobacco taxes, smoke-free environments, graphic warning labels on packaging, and comprehensive advertising and promotion bans. These measures are crucial in reducing tobacco consumption, protecting non-smokers from secondhand smoke, and creating an environment conducive to quitting.
As we observe World No Tobacco Day 2023, let us remember that together, we can create a future free from the devastating impact of tobacco and ensure a better quality of life for generations to come. |
