Draft agendas are now published

for COP10 and MOP3

The WHO FCTC has released the provisional agendas for the highly anticipated COP10 and MOP3 global tobacco control meetings scheduled to take place in Panama. With registration now open, stakeholders from around the world can secure their attendance at these events aimed at combating the global tobacco epidemic. COP10 will focus on accelerating efforts to curb tobacco use and its associated health impacts, while MOP3 will address the implementation of the Protocol to Eliminate Illicit Trade in Tobacco Products. This significant gathering presents a unique opportunity for nations to come together, share experiences, and formulate effective strategies to tackle the challenges posed by the tobacco industry and ultimately promote public health worldwide.

Germany bans flavoured products

On July 7, Germany passed a comprehensive ban on flavored cigarettes and heated tobacco products, including menthol and fruit-flavored variants. The ban reflects the nation's determination to curb tobacco addiction, particularly among young individuals, and aligns with global efforts to create a tobacco-free future.
Despite facing opposition from some quarters, Germany's decision sets a positive example for other countries, reinforcing their commitment to the WHO FCTC. By implementing this ban and supporting cessation initiatives, Germany takes a significant stride towards protecting its citizens' well-being and making a substantial impact on the worldwide fight against tobacco use.

Register for the JATC2 Kowledge Hub Meeting

The upcoming Knowledge Hub Meeting under the Joint Action on Tobacco Control 2 will be organised online on 26 September 2023. Two important topics will be tacked: " Sales via Social Networks" and " Child Safety in E-cigarettes".

Relevant authorities, scientists, and interested individuals are highly encouraged to register before 12 September 2023. Participation from the tobacco industry is strictly prohibited in accordance with Article 5.3 of the WHO FCTC.

Sign now the submission to CERD's General Recommendation no. 37 on the Right to Health

The Committee on the Elimination of Racial Discrimination (CERD) has taken a significant step towards promoting health equity and justice. They have recently urged all countries to sign and ratify the Optional Protocol to the International Covenant on the Elimination of All Forms of Racial Discrimination (ICERD). This includes adopting measures to protect vulnerable communities from the harms of tobacco.
Tobacco industry practices have disproportionately affected marginalized groups, and it's time to address this injustice. By supporting the CERD's call, we can pave the way for healthier lives and a more equitable society for everyone. Sign the petition before 3 August 2023 to help create a smoke-free future for all!

Cost-effective tobacco control measures in France

A report funded by Santé publique France and conducted by the Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD) reveals the cost-effectiveness of the French National Tobacco Control Programme. The measures taken between 2016 and 2020, such as plain packaging and price increases, result in four euros saved for every euro invested. The report estimates the prevention of 4 million illnesses and gains of 644,000 years of life between 2023 and 2050, saving €578 million in healthcare expenditure annually and creating the equivalent of 19,800 full-time jobs (€715 million gain).
This report is an opportunity for Santé publique France to communicate best practices on the forthcoming bilingual (French-English) knowledge platform on Article 12 of the WHO Framework Convention on Tobacco Control, which calls for the dissemination of knowledge of tobacco use.
